Cell Phones and the Mark of the Beast

Jewish phylacteries - the original inspiration behind the prophecy of the mark of the Beast

As I argue at length in my book Unveiling the Apocalypse, and throughout this blog, the modern use of cell phone technology has some remarkable parallels to the original inspiration of the prophecy of the mark of the Beast. When we study the original meaning of this portion of the Apocalypse, we find that the mark of the Beast is not some ethereal, spiritual mark, invisible to the naked eye (such as a modern microchip implant); but an actual box-shaped object worn on the hand or forehead that was fully visible to all. St. John's conception of the mark of the Beast was based on an inverted, diabolical form of the Jewish practise of wearing phylacteries - which were box-shaped devices worn on the arms and foreheads of devout Jews (almost definitely including Jesus and the disciples), during prayer services. The origins of this practise dates back to the time of Moses, and phylactery cases were among the finds uncovered during the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Jewish practise of wearing phylacteries, which was intended to be a public display of allegiance to Yahweh, was first commanded in the Book of Deuteronomy:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut 6:4-9)
(See the earlier post Cell phones versus RFID implants as the "mark" of the beast, for a more in depth analysis of the exact wording of this prophecy, and how it further ties in with modern cell phone technology)

The practise of laying tefillin (phylacteries) is still used by Jews today, as the below video demonstrates:

The Book of Revelation stood this practise on its head, and foretold that towards the end of time, people would be unable to buy or sell without using a similar box-shaped device, but that this time it would be a public display of allegiance to the Antichrist, and would bear the number 666. Much in the same way that the future of commerce is now inextricably linked to cell phones - which are being actively promoted by various world governments, banks, and above all mobile phone companies, as the future replacement of credit cards, and ultimately, of cash itself.
As the below video shows, it looks like Alex Jone's media company infowars.com is finally starting to awaken to the possibility that the prophecy of the mark of the Beast has already been realised in modern cell phone technology.

A report made by Paul Joseph Watson states the following:

The development of a new microchip for cell phones that knows the user’s location to within a few centimeters confirms the fact that contrary to biblical fears about mandatory implantable microchips, people have willingly exchanged their privacy for convenience and that the cell phone itself is the de facto “mark of the beast”. (Read the full article here).

Although no mention is made in this report of the similarities between the physical shape of cell phones in relation to the original inspiration behind the prophecy of the mark of the Beast.
The notion that the mark of the Beast would take the form of an invisible RFID mircochip implant only became the mainstream thinking on this subject during the 1980's, following publications such as Mary Stewart Relfe's 1981 book When Your Money Fails. Yet nowhere in the Bible is it suggested that the mark of the Beast would be invisible. Rather, given that it based on the Jewish practise of wearing phylacteries, it quite clearly suggests that the mark of the Beast would be fully visible to all  - and on a symbolic level, it is meant to be seen as an open sign which contains the number of the Beast, which is encoded on the diabolical "anti-phylacteries" through the process of Hebrew gematria. Much in the same way that the original interpretation of the number of the Beast lay in the fact that the numerical value of the name "Nero Caesar" in Hebrew was 666.
Also missing in the deductions reached by infowars.com is the fact that cell phones are set to replace credit cards as a means of commerce through the use of NFC technology and that all transactions made through these means will be conducted over the worldwide web - www. And when we convert these letters into the Hebrew alphabet, and then ascertain their numerical value through the use of gematria, we find that they are converted to three of the Hebrew letter waw - the equivalent of three sixes - six six six. (See the earlier post Hebrew 666?).

And also that the use of cell phones could lead to a future cancer epidemic in line with the bowl plague of Rev 16:

So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshipped its image.
(Rev 16:2)
(See the earlier post Cell Phones: Carcinogenic or Not?)

In the post The Synagogue of Satan, I also discuss the possibility that the letters www have been deliberately manufactured to conform to the prophecy of the mark of the Beast by some shadowy secret society.

If we look at the section of the Apocalypse concerning the mark of the Beast more closely, we find that the False Prophet constructs an image in honour of the Beast, and breathes "life" into it, causing this inanimate object to have the ability of speech:

And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.
(Rev 13:15)

Furthermore, the original Greek word usually translated as "mark" is charagma - a word which is also used to refer to a graven image or crafted cultic object. So the "image" of the Beast appears to be one and the same as the "mark" worn in the hand or forehead. And the "mark" of the Beast can just as easily be translated as the "crafted cultic object of the beast". The fact that the prophecy of the "mark" of the Beast is based on the practise of wearing phylacteries further reinforces the fact that this particular "graven image" or "crafted cultic object" is a box-shaped device. A box-shaped device which has "life breathed into it" (video-screens?), can speak (either as a phone, through video playback, or through a speak-generating computer program such as Siri), and can issue propaganda (through the www) against those who refuse to embrace it (causing those who would not worship the image of the Beast to be slain).
When we look at the exact words of the prophecy of the mark of the Beast, it tells us that everyone, great and small, rich and poor, will be deceived into constructing this "graven image" and accepting the "mark" of the Beast as an essential component for engaging in commerce.

Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.
(Rev 13:11-18)

And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
(Rev 19:20)

So the Bible makes it explicitly clear that everyone would be deceived into accepting the mark of the Beast. This means that those who accept the "mark" do so unwittingly - which is the exact situation we appear to have in the present. If people were literally going to be branded with the number 666 on their hand or forehead there wouldn't be any question of deception - everyone would know exactly what they were doing and exactly what they were accepting. For the prophecy to be realised in the fashion described in the Bible, it would have to be fulfilled in a manner that no-one was expecting.
This scenario prompts us to reconsider what the spiritual effects of receiving the mark of the Beast actually are. Given that it would be impossible to hold that an omni-benevolent God would condemn people to eternal torment for accepting a situation that they were unaware of, we would have to conclude that forgiveness is possible in this regard. So reconciliation with God would be possible for those who repent having been deceived into accepting the "mark", while those who persist in using it, despite having full knowledge of what it is that they are accepting, would open themselves to damnation - since this would be tantamount to aligning themselves with the Antichrist.

I believe it brother, getting my wife to come along too. I want to set up a farm up in the mountains and live a simple life. We both use standard cell phones when nearly every member of our family and coworkers all have smart phones. The last time we upgraded I could see the writing on the wall, within 5 years all phones will be smart phones and you will either get 'em or do without.

We've made the decision to do without.

All of this goes in line with people being able to so freely access information and "be friends" on Facebook, Twitter, etc. When in actuality you're not "being friends" with anyone. That human connection of love, of two humans spending time together is completely gone.

Man I tell you, America is heading the wrong way. Santorum has dropped out, crazy, crazy crime and unsafe cities abound over here.

Sorry for the ramble.

Hi Will,

I think it's a good idea to learn to do without, or at the very least use a basic phone with minimal contact to avoid the EMF radiation and related cancer inducing effects. After all, we all done ok without cell phones before everyone started using them around the turn of the millennium.
I honestly believe that any spiritual effects to this will be delayed until the Church makes a definitive decision. For now it hinges upon a "sola scriptura" interpretation - and only the Church can definitely interpret Scripture.
But to my mind, the evidence we can ascertain from Scripture alone is clearly overwhelming, never mind the various astronomical signs and private revelations which appear to confirm these conclusions.
The Church will surely be guided to the truth in this matter by the work of the Holy Spirit. And when it does, it will be best to be prepared...

Another enlightening post. Thank you Emmett for clarifying on this subject, for years I had thought that tatoos inbedded with microchips were going to be the norm, but, the mobile/smartphone theory makes perfect sense now. I don't know if you are aware but in Sweden no one carries cash anymore, it is the first country to do everything electronic - online, when I first heard this, it made me shudder. Yes indeed, there are some good things about it, bank and shop robberies have fallen to zero. But, this makes people live in a virtual secular world where technology anestetises senses to the point of not knowing good from evil.
How are we meant to evangelise and talk to people about prayer and penance, Love of God, if this is the pagan God that people now worship and turn to as a deviant comfort?

Lord Have Mercy on Us.

The following related development seems in line with what is discussed in your book Emmett.

http://www.news.com.au/business/googles-goggles-peer-into-future/story-fn7mjon9-1226320869977

I like how they use the funkiest hip people with big smiles in their photographs as though the technology will do that for you when in reality it will do the opposite. These technologies are turning us into numb zombies, they are dehumanising and changing our relationships with one another (albeit it is nice meeting and conversing with you people :-)

There seems to be very little understanding of what modern technology is doing to our state of being. Sometimes I stay in remote locations in Oz and the difference where there is not so much electrical interference is massive, for example quality of sleep is better, it is easier to fast, etc.

I have a smart phone, and I'm wondering what Emmett and others recommend- should I get rid of it, or should I, for the time being, just distance myself and not overuse it and watch and pray.

Truth be told, I'm using it right now. I disconnected my cable and Internet because I'm trying to simplify my life, and I wanted to downgrade this thing, but I can't really afford to.

However, if it comes to it, I will chuck it in the Missouri River with no hesitation. ;-)

As Catholics, I believe that it would be possible to use them in good conscience until the Church makes a definitive and binding decision. The theological basis for such reasoning lies in the words of Christ himself concerning the office of Peter:

"I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
(Matt 16:18-19)

Most peoples' jobs depend on being able to use cell phones, so I certainly wouldn't advocate taking any radical action until it is demanded by the Church.
I think it would be a good idea to have some sort of back-up plan though, and at the very least be prepared to live without in the future. If you are a heavy user, consider attempting to use it away from your head as much as possible (on speaker phone for example, or hands free) to avoid exposure to the electromagnetic radiation.
If the Church does come down on this in the future, a lot of jobs would be at stake, and it would seriously affect the employability of Catholics. So there would certainly be a persecution on the jobs front.
It brings to mind the aspect of the prophecy concerning being unable to engage in commerce without it: "so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name".
(Rev 13:17)
For now, it remains a theory, and your own advice sounds best. But the writing is on the wall, and we can be certain that the Church will be guided to the truth on this matter.
The mark of the Beast was never going to be something that was expected though, otherwise it wouldn't be accepted. Rev 19:20 quite clearly states that the inhabitants of the earth would be deceived into accepting the mark of the beast:
"And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image".
(Rev 19:20)
This suggests that people would be unaware that they had accepted it - instead they would be tricked into it. The Apocalypse also states that ALL would blindly accept it:
"Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead"
(Rev 13:16)

Thanks for that important link Jamey!
I have been expecting the technology of "TV glasses" to further develop, in order to explain how the "mark" is "worn" on the forehead as opposed to holding it against the head, but didn't realise it had come so far so quickly. I'll have to incorporate that into a blog post.

Hi Anne,

Sweden is ahead of most other countries when it comes to electronic money. Only 3% of its economy uses cash. But eventually this will filter down to every other industrialised country in a few years time, and many developing countries as well which only offering banking services through mobile handsets. Payment through mobile phones will eventually replace cash and credit cards. The below material comes from Associated Press on Sweden's use of electronic money:

In most Swedish cities, public buses don't accept cash; tickets are prepaid or purchased with a cell phone text message. A small but growing number of businesses only take cards, and some bank offices — which make money on electronic transactions — have stopped handling cash altogether.
"There are towns where it isn't at all possible anymore to enter a bank and use cash," complains Curt Persson, chairman of Sweden's National Pensioners' Organization.
He says that's a problem for elderly people in rural areas who don't have credit cards or don't know how to use them to withdraw cash.
The decline of cash is noticeable even in houses of worship, like the Carl Gustaf Church in Karlshamn, southern Sweden, where Vicar Johan Tyrberg recently installed a card reader to make it easier for worshippers to make offerings...
Swedish company iZettel has developed a device for small traders, similar to Square in the U.S., that plugs into the back of an iPhone to make it work like a credit card terminal. Sweden's biggest banks are expected to launch a joint service later this year that allows customers to transfer money between each other's accounts in real-time with their cell phones.

i am worried the mark of the beast is the slain in the spirit rubbish you have today! when the devil is defeated in heaven he had 7 heads, 10 horns and 7 crowns! when he appears on earth he has gained 3 crowns- 3 more than heads to fit them! they aren't real but the fabricated father son holy spirit! satan sets himself up in the temple of god to be worshiped as god. he pretends to be the holy spirit, doing false miracles and causing even fire to come down from heaven in full view of man. - the false tongues! 6 6 6 is the number of a man- it is a man claiming the father, son, and holy spirit! laying hands on people slaying them with his mark on his hand! and the people slain by his mark on their foreheads, receiving it! no-one can buy or sell without the mark, being that they cannot receive or give the holy spirit and its gifts without this action and succumbing to this cults church by giving money- prosperity teaching! even simon the sorcerer, recognized the holy spirit is given by the laying of hands and offered money! just maybe evil spirits can be given by the same method of touch! that we should really test the spirits before having some stranger lay hands on us! one of the fruits of the spirit is self control- these groups don't exercise this! the lamb that speaks like a dragon being these ministers that yell their preachings at the congregations, to convince those listeners its the power of god in them! it causes the abomination that causes desolation, - unbelievers and true believers are are thrown into doubt!
read all of Isaiah 28 take note of verse 13 -But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and "taken". i believe these people are possessed and not by the holy spirit! i have much to say on this topic, but will wrap it up for now! i might be wrong, its just a different view that seems to fit so well in my opinion, and this is why " even the elect will be fooled, (if possible).

Wow. Don't wait for the church to tell you. Smart phones are the mark. Look at apples logo. An apple with a bite taken out of it. Come on if that's not proof of satanic influence what is.

Emmett O'Regan said...

Hi Michael,
You're right, I don't think we need to wait for the Church to state the obvious. But there won't be any canonical penalties (and thus spiritual penalties) until the Church actually declares it as so. In fact, I think this is part of the prophecy itself - I believe that the announcement of the canonical penalties of accepting the mark is foretold in Rev 14, and that the third angel represents a pope:

"And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”
(Rev 14:9-11)

This is crazy cause me and my family were talking about god and this came up. So I came home to look it up and were not the only ones who came to this conclusion. My mind was literally blow. When you use a phone you hold it in your hand and hold it up to your head. Claiming the two spots for the mark of the beast. The US current is bound to collapse sooner or later, and now there is the bit coin. an electronic currency that could replace what we have now. That would require the use of a portable electronic device. Maybe not today but I think this will eventually evolve to that. We already store are entire lives in the phone, and we are obsessed with having it. Also the internets world wide web "WWW" is 666 in hebrew. We have phone numbers and IP addresses that now give us a number. Now that I know this it makes me wonder if can live without my phone.

Emmett O'Regan said...

Hi Anon,

Yes, it is deeply concerning about how anyone will be able to get by without using cell phones, since they already play such a central role in conducting business and commerce. And of course this sense of dependency will only increase even further, when cell phones eventually replace credit cards through the use of NFC technology - which many experts believe will happen within the next 6-7 years:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21504319

But of course Christian life during the fulfillment of the prophecy of the mark of the Beast was never going to be easy. My only advice is, if you are Catholic, wait for the Church authorities to make some formal statement before taking any drastic action. If you are Protestant adhering to sola scriptura, then you will have to make some sort of discernment on your own part in this matter.

richardatf said...

Yeshua HaMashiac calls to you, he entreats you to study the Word for yourself, and not to rely upon the judgement of men. You must study to show YOURSELF approved. This strategy of waiting "for the Church authorities to make some formal statement before taking" action is tantamount to allowing another person to do the thinking for you. You are smarter than that, rethink your position.

Emmett O'Regan said...

Hi Richard,

I understand your position. But Catholics don't adhere to Sola Scriptura. We believe that once the Church acts collectively and in unison with the successor of St. Peter, then it is guided by the Holy Spirit. It is this higher authority I wish to invoke, rather than relying on my own hypotheses to determine what "the spirit is saying to the churches" (Rev 2:7). That being said, personally I am utterly convinced that cashless transactions through cell phone technology is the ultimate fulfillment of the mark of the Beast.
