2012 and the Mayan "Apocalypse"

Today, the 21st December 2012, marks the end of the 13th baktun on the Long Count Calendar, represented as 13.0.0.0.0 in the Maya system. Given that the "2012 phenomenon" has nothing to do with Catholic prophecy, I'm not overly concerned about the significance of this date - especially not in relation to any impending disaster. As we have discussed before on previous posts, I am open to the idea that other non-Christian cultures can sometimes possess the gift of prophecy. But the only way we can determine if a particular prophecy has genuine insight into the future is by examining it in retrospect - which in this case, we will be able to do so very shortly.
Most commentators agree that the Maya did not see this date as marking the end of the world, but rather that they viewed the turning of the cycles as a time of great change - the transition of one period into another would lead to renewal. Yet some texts connected to the end of the Long Count calendar, such as the Chilam Balam, did link this period to great upheavals that would result in the end of the world (which has some striking parallels to the mega-tsunami/Second Coming hypothesis I forward in my book Unveiling the Apocalypse - see the earlier post on this subject here). But I most certainly don't think that today's date has any relation to the mega-tsunami threat posed by the future collapse of Cumbre Vieja - especially since the era of peace/Second Pentecost must take place before the tribulation period and the Second Coming of Christ - which clearly has not happened yet.
As I discuss in the earlier post The Date of the End-Time: 2012 or 2087, there is a possibility that an alternative date can be derived from the Mayan system if actual 365 day years were used instead of the 360 days of the tun unit of measurement. But it would be very unwise for anyone to follow a set timetable of prophetic events, and the year 2087 is again of no relevance to Catholic prophecy and not something I would pay much heed to myself.
It is interesting though that at least one Catholic prophecy does refer to a date around the year 2012 - the Prophecy of Blessed Tomasuccio de Foligno (although I still cannot completely verify its authenticity) as a time of renewal for the Church. But this is not connected to any specific date, and allows for a more general time period up to the end of the year 2013.

  1. Thank you for another excellent post Emmett.

    In light of today being the "End of the world"..... What has amazed me beyond measure is how many people are caught up in this "Mayan calendar 12/21/2012 end of the world stupidity" and are being dominated by the spirit of superstition, out of control emotions and biblical ignorance (John 3:19-21, 2 Cor. 4:2-4). What is very revealing is that deep down inside the hearts of this fallen world they know that they are on a global collision course with Almighty God and the Day of His wrath is at hand (Rom. 1:18-32, Rev. 6-19)! They do not know how to put it all together but one thing is for sure, they know that global doomsday is just around the corner and they cannot escape its convicting weight.

    From books to movies to songs the world testifies through these mediums that they know the jig is up. The world has given themselves over to delusion, darkness, superstition and doubt and are void of solutions and answers for the world's present crises. Instead of turning to Almighty God - Who does NOT lie (1 Sam. 15:29, Titus 1:1-2, Heb.6:18) - and His ETERNAL Word for the REAL answers and remedies which are based in ABSOLUTE REALITY, the world would rather - in their darkened estate (John 3:19) - believe in fallen mankind's darken vain prophets of doom like Nostradamus and the likes of the Mayan's who were astounding mass murders and oppressors. How True are the words of the Lord Jesus;

    "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." (John 3:19-21

    In ALL things it is Almighty God and His INFALLIBLE Word which are to believed and received in these ever darkened days of deception and darkness. May the Light of Almighty God's precious Word light our path here in time and rightly get us safe to our eternal destination.

  2. Now that 21/12/2012 has passed would be nice to see the great apostasy from the new age movement which Matthew Arnold described as a concoction of "ancient eastern mysticism, western pop psychology and old heresies."

    Went to the library recently to look at a couple of Christian books, lo and behold they were located in the section previously labelled "Religion" but now changed to "New Age". All people I know involved in new ageism are mentally unwell and there is a reason for that as it is the doctrine of demons.

    Anne said:"What is very revealing is that deep down inside the hearts of this fallen world they know that they are on a global collision course with Almighty God and the Day of His wrath is at hand (Rom. 1:18-32, Rev. 6-19)!"

    Concurred, this I think the angst of what much of the populace is feeling although it isn't yet conscious.
